Some ten years ago, Jim Wolfe purchased what is now known as the Wolfe Red River Ranch in Davidson, Oklahoma and began to build on what Mother Nature had provided to create a true “hunter’s paradise”Â. This hunting ranch has hosted business clients from all over the United States and has served as a wonderful place for great relationships to be built.
Davidson is in Tillman County in far southwest Oklahoma and is directly across the Red River from Vernon, Texas. Oklahoma City is 140 miles away and the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport is 175 miles.
This 960+/- acre Oklahoma hunting property has county road access and ¾ mile Red River frontage with riparian corridor and various water holes. In 2010 Jim Wolfe was honored by being awarded the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation Landowner of the Year. This award goes to a landowner who has gone above and beyond normal practices to improve their property for wildlife habitation.
Mr. Wolfe and his excellent ranch manager Lloyd Kelly have continued to improve this ranch even more since then. They have taken advantage of programs through the Department of Wildlife such as Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program, Deer Management Assistance program, and the Federal Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program.
They have built fences to protect the riparian areas and there is more than one mile of creek that is the roosting ground for hundreds of wild turkey. The majority of the boundary and cross fences are new 5-wire barb wire. Huge pecan trees line this spring-fed creek which creates a haven for turkey. The water quality in the creek is so good that wildlife biologists have found fresh water shrimp present.
Six water wells have been developed with solar powered pumps and 4000-gallon water tanks providing ample water supply for deer during the drought. Drain pans below each tank keep an ample water supply for dove, quail, turkey, and other birds. One well has a large generator and can produce a large quantity of water in a short period. Most wells are 37 feet deep and average 95-100 gallons per minute.
Native forage that wildlife thrive on has strengthened all over the ranch. Chittum Trees and Prickly Ash are craved by deer and are abundant. Native plants such as Queens Delight and grasses such as Big and Little Bluestem can be found throughout the property. Big Bluestem is one of nature’s highest quality and most palatable grasses and Little Bluestem provides an excellent nesting source for quail.
The Red River and the various water holes on the ranch have created tremendous duck hunting over the years. Record deer and turkey are harvested here each year. Quail are increasing in response to the excellent plant and forage management.
Dove can be seen everywhere but this ranch is just a few miles from Oklahoma’s famous Hackberry Flats that is some of the best dove hunting in the country.
